that they are working on. As a coordinator, you have the opportunity to manage your own team

Community Kitchen
The Community Kitchen Program was established in partnership with Neighborhood House.
This is a great project for people interested in nutrition and dietetics. In the previous years, this
program focused on designing healthy recipes and cooking meals for the residents of the DTES.
Healthy Hearts
The focus of this program is to educate the inner city population about issues surrounding
cardiovascular disease. It identifies people at risk for heart disease and offers them practical
ways to reduce their risk. Activities for this program can include a series of stations, such as
smoking cessation and stress relief, with student led counseling, providing BP measurements
or discussing about CV medications.
Bug Talk
The Bug Talk Program involves planning a series of interactive workshops about infectious diseases
for the residents of the DTES. Its goal is the raise awareness of certian diseases that are prevalent
in the inner city population. Subjects covered in the previous years included STIs, H1N1, influenza
and pneumonia.
Elementary School Outreach
Education is a key element in preventing drug addictions. We plan to visit inner city grade 7 classes
and address topics related to drug addictions/substance abuse. In addition to integration with the
current grade 7 curriculum, we wish to discuss the long term and short term consequences of drug
use, potential exposure to STDs, and urban myths around the subject. Furthermore, we want to
provide the students with resources and tools to make an informed decision.
Workshop outline:
* Total of 2 workshops per semester per grade 7 class
* Focus: informed decision making on commonly abused drug use
* 1st workshop: End of September, 2010 (1 hour)
* 2nd workshop: End of October, 2010 (1 hour)
Volunteers:
Volunteers will be working with the planning committee to prepare the Power Point presentation
(research materials prepared by planning committee), visual aids, props/tools and present to the
grade 7 class. Volunteers will also be researching for the anonymous questions received from 1st
workshop and deliver the answers during 2nd workshop.
4 volunteer positions are available and each volunteer must be able to attend both workshops as
well as the next ESO meeting on Wednesday September 8th at 5 PM, Woodward IRC Concourse.

Please forward your name, faculty and a paragraph of statement of interest chius.eso@gmail.com

CHIUS Addictions Program
The Addictions program is a brand new, two-year initiative within CHIUS to increase our knowledge about Addictions-related issues commonly encountered in the Downtown Eastside and to utilize that knowledge in the development and implementation of a workshop for Downtown Eastside residents about Addictions. Unfortunately, addictions is a big topic with many of our clients, and it is hoped that through this program, CHIUS volunteers will be better prepared to speak more intelligently and comfortably about Addictions-related issues.
Currently, we are looking to recruit about 15-20 dedicated "student champions" who are keenly interested in learning more about Addictions. We're looking for volunteers from all health professions! This is an exciting opportunity to represent your discipline and help to develop educational sessions about addictions targeted at other CHIUS volunteers (ie. students teaching students) over the next four months. Please refer to the attachment for further information.
The deadline to submit your interest is Monday, November 29. Please email pharm.chius@gmail.com if or if you have any questions!
Cheers,
Charles Au

CHIUS is a clinic run by future health care providers from all disciplines. As such, it is our duty to provide education to those who we come in contact with. Whether it be through our elementary school educational programming, or through our brown bag events, we strive to empower the general public, especially those in the underserved parts of Greater Vancouver, with information to help them make informed decisions about all aspects and challenges they may face pertaining to their health.
CHIUS would like to thank our following sponsors for their constant support through the years. As a student run organization, we rely heavily on sponsorship to sustain our many programs and activities.

CHIUS is currently launching a evaluation project to assess its clinic and programming activities. This research project involves evaluating the quality of care delivered by CHIUS volunteers, as determined by patients, as well as gaining an understanding of CHIUS volunteer satisfaction and learning objectives. Assessing current CHIUS clinic participation and workshops is essential to maintain a dynamic program well-suited to the needs of both patients and volunteers, and to implement potential reforms.
