CHIUS Executive

With the exception of our Physician mentors and our administrator Lindsay, our executive team is composed entirely of students! Our team is composed of a minimum, one student from every faculty involved with CHIUS, this ensures equal representation at our executive meetings. Our meetings are held on a monthly basis, and not held during the summer months. If you want to get more involved in keeping the clinic running, either by helping to locate potential resources, or to orient new volunteers, or design your own programs etc., keep your ears open to the opportunities as they come out!

If you want to be part of our general executive team, look for the CHIUS executive-recruitment email which will be sent out around December/January!

We look forward to working with you in the near future!

I have been with CHIUS as the Executive’s Administrative Assistant since the Fall of 2008. My other job has made me quite familiar with the Downtown Eastside so it has been nice to be involved with an organization that works to provide services to this unique community. When not doing CHIUS related work, I like to spend my time traveling, but when closer to home I love snowboarding, doing anything active outdoors and trying new restaurants.

About
My name is Gunpreet and I am a second year medical student. I started off as a volunteer at CHIUS and eventually became the Junior Co-Chair. The interactions I have had with the clinic patients, physicians, mentors, and other student volunteers have truly been an amazing learning experience. Every weekend, CHIUS becomes part of a team that tends to the health care needs of the DTES. It is an honor to be part of such a team. In my free time, you can find me watching any of the Harry Potter movies (I am an avid fan!), walking my 6 month old Labradoodle, or catching up with friends and family.

About
I am currently heading into my fourth year in the faculty of Pharmacy at UBC. I initially started with CHIUS because I wanted to learn in an interdisciplinary manner, and this aspect of CHIUS is absolutely amazing! After doing a few shifts, I realized that I was not only able to learn from students of other disciplines, but I was also able to consolidate my own knowledge through both teaching students from other faculties about drugs, and also being able to apply my pharmaceutics knowledge to actual patients. I encourage anyone reading this to apply for CHIUS the next time our application cycle opens up in September and/or January!

About
I am a fourth year Pharmacy student currently acting as one of the Supervisor Co-Chairs. I became involved with CHIUS two years ago because I wanted to learn more about our neighbours in the Downtown Eastside. Through my experiences, I realized just how much of a difference we can make as students and as future health care professionals in the lives of underserved populations in our community. The positive experience that I have thus far is what drives me to continue to volunteer with CHIUS.

About
I am a second year pharmacy student and I became part of CHIUS in 2009. I started off as a DCHC clinical volunteer because I wanted to gain real life experience in healthcare and understand what interdisciplinary approach to patient care was. It took me only a couple of shifts to realize that volunteering with CHIUS was one of the best decision I have made. It reinforced nicely with what was being taught in school, and, at the same time, I gained concrete knowledge about the situation in the DTES and what my role as a pharmacy student/future pharmacist was. This eventually led me to join the CHIUS executive team as a junior co-char for the supervisor committee! In my spare time, I like to listen to music, play basketball, eat pho and play Starcraft 2.

About
Hi! My name is Jane and I am currently a third year pharmacy student. I have been heavily involved with CHIUS since 2009 mainly with the outreach programs. I personally really LOVE CHIUS because it is a great place for students to apply/learn clinical skills while providing care to whom can benefit from it. On top of that, CHIUS is also an organization where your vision and passion can be realized with the support from the senior executives and enthusiastic volunteers. In the past year, CHIUS Programming has brought forth a Shelter Outreach Program (currently implemented as Saturday Wound Care Clinic), Elementary School Outreach Program on top of the existing programs such as Brown Bag Events, Social Sundays, and Bug Talk. So sign up for our programming events or even propose a program of your own!

I\'m in my 3rd year of Medicine and originally became involved in CHIUS as a pharmacy student. I have always embraced interprofessionalism and the DTES is a fabulous place to learn and apply these principles. Outside of school and CHIUS, I enjoy watching reality TV, trying out new restaurants around town (at least as much as my budget will allow, which is not much as a student) and catching up on sleep.

I am a second year student in Pharmacy and I have been involved with CHIUS since Sept 2009. I became involved with CHIUS because it allowed me to see myself as a future health care professional - rather than just a student who was studying in an undergraduate program that happened to be health-care related. I\\\\\\\'ve always loved money, and seeing this position open, along with some previous experience in financing, brought me to this Funding Co-Chair position today. In my minimal outside-of-school time, I usually spend my time working and making money, and then spending that on traveling and eating =).

I am a third year Pharmacy student and have been involved with CHIUS since Sept 2010. I became interested with CHIUS because it allowed me to bridge the gap between what I am learning in school and the real world. In my spare time, I enjoy cooking yummy snacks, playing the piano, traveling and catching up on sleep.

My involvement with CHIUS has been rewarding, enjoyable and an opportunity to apply the knowledge I am learning at school. CHIUS has helped prepare me for my dietetics internship which I will begin in September 2011. I grew up in Victoria and studied social sciences at UIVC for 2 years before transferring to UBC and completing the pre-requisites for the dietetics program. My name is Matthew Cooper and I am the Faculty of Medicine Representative. I just started my third year of school and I have been working with CHIUS since I started in medicine, initially volunteering at the clinic and then helping to organise a Healthy Hearts (enhanced!) workshop that we held at both the Carnegie Community Centre and the DCHC. Spare time is increasingly hard to come by but I spend as much time as possible outdoors and, of course, getting up to no good with friends. Residency could send me far away and I am trying to soak in as much Vancouver as I can ... just in case. I look forward to working with all the executives and students involved with CHIUS as we move this great initiative forward.

I just started volunteering with CHIUS this year because I wanted to get a chance to practice my hands on skills with a population that could really benefit from increased health care. I love the atmosphere so far at CHIUS and can\\\'t wait to be a part of such an enthusiastic team. I grew up in Langley and did my bachelors degree at the University of the Fraser Valley before coming to UBC for my Masters.
