CHIUS Thanks the UBC Department of Family Practice
CHIUS would like to thank the Department of Family Practice at UBC for its ongoing support and the generous donation of many clothing items during our Winter Clothing Drive. As a result of your contributions we were able to distribute warm, dry clothing to many Downtown Eastside Residents this past winter. Many thanks to all others who so kindly donated their used items!
CHIUS Introduces a New Interdisciplinary Mentorship Program at the Downtown Community Health Centre
CHIUS is pleased to announce that it has expanded its professional circle to include mentors from physical therapy, occupational therapy, dietetics, nursing, dietetics and social work to service the DCHC. Each month, a specific day is designated to these mentors to participate in clinic activity with students from their respective health disciplines. We hope that in this way, we will be able to provide opportunities to both healthcare students and residents of the DTES alike to benefit from more focused learning opportunities and greater expanded services. If you are interested in volunteering for a discipline specific day, please contact your respective faculty representative for more details.
Social Sundays!
CHIUS is currently calling on its volunteers to help out with a new initiative taking place in the Downtown Community Health Clinic. "Social Sunday's" was piloted through the month of December with volunteers offering coffee, tea, and conversation to all visitors, patients and staff of the clinic. We have found this to be a very popular event and want to see it continue and grow in 2010!! The main role of volunteers will be to meet health needs that fall outside of the traditional medical setting. This may include informal support, referral or recommendation of services, providing clothing and meeting other basic needs. Student volunteers benefit from learning about the clients through a different avenue, practicing a holistic approach to health and well being, a greater ability to be responsive to client needs as well as learning from other disciplines. Mentors will also be available to provide support. If you are interested in more information about "Social Sunday's" or are interested in volunteering contact your CHIUS faculty representative or Alison Bergum at abergum@hotmail.com.
